Chapter Ten

Everything Is Negotiable

There was no sound, just heavy breathing. Air, thick enough to slice, suffocated me, and a drop of sweat slid down my spine. Everyone stood in silence, locked in a staring match. All eyes were on the enemy, but my heart pounded, waiting…waiting for the High Priest to make a decision that favored us, not the scum of this earth.

The Council needed to draw the Witches onto their side because they knew that with the coven came power and strength enough to weaken us. Same reason I was here to get them on our side.

Tagar, the High Priest of the Blood Moon Coven, lifted his chin, lips thin as paper, and his blue green eyes locked on the shorter man who showed no sign of nerves. Unlike me, who sweated nonstop, or maybe it was lack of wind. The air stilled around us like it waited for Tagar to make a decision too.

He cleared his throat. “So, you're willing to give us a voice and laws of our own and in exchange we stand with you and burn the old ways to the ground?”

Ava gasped beside me, and I clutched her hand in mine.

The council member’s mouth split into a toothy grin as he gave a nod. An agreement that they were buying out the Witches. Offering them representation. A voice. To change their tainted image.

I sucked in a rushed breath. I wanted to scream and kick the guy all the way to the moon. His widening smile sickened me. The Council had already killed so many but that was just the beginning, wasn’t it? My feet slipped forward, muscles tense, but a hand looped around my waist, holding me in place. Judas’ lips were on my ears, whispering, “You can’t.”

Fuck, I knew that better than anyone, Dad ingrained it in me for years, but sharing space with a murderer had me trembling with fury.

The Wolf shifter murdered on the streets before our eyes punched through my thoughts. The Council were killers. Everyone on their side had blood on their hands, and the Witches would too if they took this deal.

Judas’ arm held me tight, the warmth of his breath on my shoulder helped calm me. Of course he was right, this wasn’t about me, but the High Priest deciding the fate of his coven.

“What will it be?” the negotiator bellowed, like somehow he stood over us, and we were nothing but the dirt he walked on.

That time Judas twitched against me, his breath racing, but he stayed back and waited.

Silence choked me.

“Give me a day to think about it,” Tagar announced, swallowing a bit too loudly. Nerves finally getting the better of him.

My heart clenched, utterly heartbroken to hear the possibility in his voice that he might opt to side with the Supernatural Council. I exchanged nervous glances with my Wolves.

Brow furrowing, the negotiator huffed his disappointment, and as much I wanted to rip that scowl off his face, my insides caved.

Tagar was giving this thought… considering the prospect of siding with the enemy for power.
